I noticed that, because i got a few of them to sell when it first came out, and for whatever reason, I never got around to listing them for sale. But as I like to tell my wife, “I always do what I say I will…eventually.” So here I am after a decade, finally getting this one done. Ten years ago, Japanese magic was going through a strong trend toward effects using “everyday” items. And that is why Tenyo’s offerings from that period tended to be less gimmicky looking. Although this disappointed many of the Tenyo fans who loved the gadget-y props, it did result in some neat and performable items, including Magic Memo Pad. Effect: show a pad of paper, and draw a “hole” on the front page. Take a coin (US quarter or similar sized coin) and push it into the hole. The coin vanishes (having gone into the hole, of course). Now add a “cup” to the drawing, the hole becoming the mouth of the cup. Take another coin and drop it into the cup — the coin vanishes as the audience hears it fall into the cup and land with the other coin. Finally, draw a handle on the cup, turning it into a “bucket”, and take one more coin. Push it against the drawing and it vanishes, falling into the bucket — again, the spectators hear the coin land on the other two in the bucket. To end, tear the drawing off the pad, and hand it to the spectator as a souvenir. Although what is seen is quite ordinary looking, the gimmick is very ingenious. When I first opened my own Magic Memo Pad, I was a bit concerned that the gimmick was too complicated and that would be difficult to work. But when I got it assembled with the pad, I found it is actually very easy to do, and (from about 270 degrees of viewing) very deceptive and puzzling — it looks like a camera trick in real life. (As implied in the last set of parenthesis, the trick has some bad angles, but they are not insurmountable) The pad supplied is from Japan, of course, and so you may want to get a similar sized pad from your local Office supply store. If you do, get one with spiral binding at the top, as this makes the handling of the pad that much easier. In the 10 years I have been procrastinating this listing, it looks like this item has become very hard to find outside of Japan.
