MacGregor Jr. ————————————————————————— Massachusetts Maritime Academy was established in June 1891 as the Massachusetts Nautical Training school and renamed to its present name in 1942. The first training ship loaned by the Navy was the USS Enterprise; Mass Maritime is the second oldest state maritime academy in the United States. The Academy is located on Taylor’s Point in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts and prepares students for careers in the maritime, engineering, emergency management and environmental fields. Mass Maritime operates a training ship, the USTS Kennedy as depicted on this Nautical Chart Watercolor Painting. The USTS Kennedy T-AK-5059 is a former commercial freighter named Velma Lykes. She was built under MARAD (United States Maritime Administration) contract by Avondale Industries, New Orleans, LA and delivered to Lykes Brothers Steamship company in 1966; Later on the ship was reacquired by MARAD and renamed Cape Bon. In 2001 the Cape Bon was converted to a training ship at Bender Ship Repair in Mobile, Alabama. She was delivered to Mass. Maritime in 2002 and renamed Enterprise, But renamed USTS Kennedy January 2009 in honor of the Kennedy family. His engineering career, from which he is now retired, included working for military and aerospace companies in industrial engineering and IR optics. His painting incorporates “old skool” mechanical and civil drafting tools and he uses a mixed medium of watercolors, acrylics and inks. Two rabbits are often in quite a few of his paintings.
