[PROVENANCE: Purchased by the current owner for $5,000 in 1989.] Theophanis Phoebus Stavropoulos (Theo) was born on the 3rd of June 1930 in Athens, Greece where he lived through some of that country’s most tumultuous years. The struggles during the Metaxas Regime ended in 1939 with the invasion of the Italians under Mussolini. Theo claimed that those two years of occupation were mild compared to what came next as Hitler’s troops took over the country. Food was scarce. Punishments were extreme. The three children of General Stavropoulos’ family were on their own as both parents were imprisoned. In spite of it all, Theo managed to pursue his passion in art. His first teacher was Yorgo Gounoropoulos, a well-known Greek painter in Athens whose fine drawing and luminous visions influenced the artist all his life. He also studied at the School of Fine Arts in Athens and was given an exhibit in Cairo, Egypt. After the war he went to Paris where he studied at Le Grande Chaumiere, the Academie Julien and the Ecole des Beaux Arts (from which he received a certificate). The “City of Light” was a scene of much artistic excitement and inspiration. Picasso and Braque were still painting and Sartre and Camus could be seen in the cafes of the Left Bank. Theo was invited to study for a time with Fernand Leger. In 1953 he exhibited at the famed Salon d’Automne and the following year was included in the Salon du Printemps. He was also entered in an exhibition at the Salon des Artistes Français. At the suggestion of a friend, he applied for and received a scholarship to Yale University in New Haven in 1955. There he earned his BFA and studied with Josef Albers from whom he learned that master’s color principles which he later taught at Lehman College. In 1958, major exhibit of his work was given at the Jewish Center in New Haven. He returned for a time to Greece in 1959 where he and his wife, Susan, were married. The couple returned to live in New Haven where he was given a showing of paintings at the Munson Gallery. He was included in the Collector’s Exhibition at the Rhode Island School of Design. A private agent gave him an exhibition in New York City, and,there he was discovered by a gallery director, Gerda Wallach, from Litchfield, Connecticut. She was a staunch supporter of Theo all her life. He had several very successful shows with her, and through them, established many contacts. In 1964, Theo and his family moved to New York City where he exhibited several times in the Alice Nash Gallery. Later he exhibited at the Roko Gallery in New York. Group shows included the P.V.I. Gallery in NYC; Marion Koogler Gallery in San Antonio, Texas; Sneed Gallery in Rockford, Illinois; Contemporaries Gallery in New York City; Gallerie Simone Stern in New Orleans and Los Angeles; and others. His works are in collections of the Musée Moderne, Paris; University of Bridgeport, CT; Remington Rand Company; The Ranger Foundation of the National Academy of Design, NY; and Fine Arts Foundation of Hartford, CT. Theo taught for several years at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, and later, came to Lehman College, where he remained until his retirement in 1991. The childhood years of war, the heady intellectual atmosphere of his Paris years and the magic of color as taught by Albers all served to make Theo a remarkable artist and the dedicated teacher whose students will never forget the wide-ranging world of intellect and art he gave them.
